Executive class is both the most luxurious and also the most exclusive class of travel in Italy. Consisting of only 8 to 10 seats, the Executive class is located at one end of the train and has its own dedicated steward, as well as staff on the platform to guide passengers to their seat(s). The comfortable armchair-style seats have an extendable footrest, and can be rotated 180 degrees so can face either direction. A complimentary cold meal with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks is included with the ticket, and the extensive menu offers options for different times of day. Executive Class passengers can make use of the FRECCIALounge or FRECCIACLub facilities located in the main Italian train stations prior to travel.

Trenitalia operates Intercity trains on the non-high-speed network, including routes between Naples and Sicily and from Rome and Milan to La Spezia and the Cinque Terre. Trains to and from Sicily are the only remaining trains in Europe to travel by train ferry across the Straits of Messina, before continuing the journey on land.
Most trains offer open-plan seating, though a few have 6-seat compartments. Standard class seats are arranged 2+2 across the train car; First Class offers 2+1 seating, including tables for two as well as solo seats. There is no café car on board, although many trains offer vending machines selling drinks and snacks. On longer journeys, we recommend taking food and drink onto the train. Luggage racks are available at the end of each train car, whilst smaller items can be stored in the overhead racks.
Regional trains operate on shorter distances, popular journeys include Florence-Pisa and Florence-Siena, as well as most journeys in Sicily. Most are Standard class only and there are no pre-assigned seats – seats are chosen when boarding the train.
Overnight trains with sleeping cars run between the North and South of Italy, including Sicily. Popular routes include travel to/from either Milan and Bologna, or Rome and Naples, to Palermo, Catania, and Siracuse in Sicily. A handful of these routes offer 1 or 2-bed sleepers; these are known as Superior sleepers. All services offer 1, 2 and 3-bed sleepers with a washbasin, branded as Relax. Both types have bunk bed-style accommodation and come fully made up with clean sheets, pillows, and a duvet. Towels and amenity kits with toothpaste and soap are provided on board. For the daytime part of the journey, the beds fold away to form a 3-seat sofa. A light complimentary breakfast including coffee and juice is served in the morning; we recommend bringing food and drink onboard for the evening.
