Salerno
Salerno is a vibrant coastal city in southern Italy, located at the gateway to the Amalfi Coast in the Campania region. Blending a laid-back seaside atmosphere with rich history, Salerno offers medieval architecture, a charming old town (Centro Storico), and a beautiful waterfront promenade known as the Lungomare Trieste. The city is home to the Salerno Cathedral (Duomo di San Matteo), which dates back to the 11th century and houses the relics of Saint Matthew, as well as the historic Arechi Castle, offering panoramic views over the Gulf of Salerno.
Beyond its cultural sights, Salerno is known for its excellent food scene, featuring traditional Campanian cuisine, fresh seafood, and easy access to regional specialties like mozzarella di bufala from nearby Paestum. Thanks to its well-connected train station and ferry port, Salerno serves as an ideal base for exploring the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Pompeii, and Paestum, while remaining less crowded and more affordable than neighboring coastal towns.
